NAPIS® 'Step-by-Step' for Changing Query Preferences
- The QryPref.DB table determines which fields are included
as 'Available Fields' and default 'Query Result
Fields' (those in the gray box) in Inventory 'Query
Fields Preferences' dialogs.

- The same table is used to determine which fields appear in 'Query Builder' dialogs and which fields are used for creating 'Export' files during Submits.
- You may edit the QryPref.DB table to reset the display of the NAPIS Inventory by using Paradox or Table Interrogator. In this exercise we will use the Table Interrogator.
Step 1. Open Table Interrogator:
In Windows Explorer navigate to 'c:\Program Files\Napis Lite\Utilities' and double-click the 'Table_Structure.exe' application. The program will open as shown.
Step 2. Set the 'Alias' name and the 'Table' name:
Click the down arrow to the right of the 'Aliases' field and select 'NAPIS_SYSTEM_LITE'. Use the pull-down list to the right of the 'Tables' field to select the 'QryPref.DB' table.
Note: If you are using a higher-level NAPIS product, select Alias = 'NAPIS_SYSTEM' instead. Edits made in 'NAPIS_SYSTEM_LITE' only affect NAPIS Lite, and edits made in 'NAPIS_SYSTEM' only affect NAPIS Enterprise or Laboratory.
Step 3. Click on the 'Data' tab and review the column headers:
The column headers and their descriptions are listed in the first table below. The second table defines the abbreviated LIMS functions that are represented by the * in the first table.
| Column Header | Description |
| TableName | The name of the NAPIS table. |
| FieldName | The name of the field in the table. |
| DisplayName | The name that is displayed in the 'Query Fields Preferences' and 'Query Builder' dialogs. |
| *_Summary | These columns have an 'x' for a field that appears in the 'Query Fields Preferences' and 'Query Builder' dialogs for that specific LIMS function. |
| *_Default | These columns have an 'x' for a field that is always included for that specific LIMS function (it will appear in the gray box under 'Query Result Fields'), and an 'e' for a field that is always included in the Export file for a Submit. |
| *_Select | These columns have a value ≥ 0 for a field that is selected for that specific LIMS function. The fields appear in ascending order based on the value of this column (if the values in the column are equal, the fields will appear in alphabetical order). |
| *_ Export | These columns have a value ≥ 0 for a field that is selected for an Export file for that specific LIMS function. The fields appear in ascending order based on the value of this column (if the values in the column are equal, the fields will appear in alphabetical order). |
| Abbreviation | LIMS | function |
| TissueField | Inventory | Biomass Samples (Field) |
| TissueLab | Inventory | Biomass Samples (Lab Bank) |
| Collection | Inventory | Collection / Isolate |
| Voucher | Inventory | Voucher Specimens |
| MicroSource | Inventory | Microorganism Source Materials |
| MicroCryo | Inventory | Microorganism Cryo Preserves |
| Chemistry | Inventory | Chemistry Material Samples |
| MicroTiter | Inventory | Microtiter Plates |
| PlatePrep | Work Order | Microtiter Plate Preparation |
| Ferm | Inventory | Fermentation Samples (Fermentation Lab) |
| FermLab | Inventory | Fermentation Samples (Lab Bank) |
Step 4. Edit fields as appropriate:
Double-click your mouse inside a box to edit that field. After entering a value click the 'checkmark' pictured below to post the edit. If there are no edits to post, the checkmark will not be highlighted (it will be a light gray instead of black).
We recommend that you do not edit the 'TableName' and 'FieldName' columns, as these are preset and accurate. However, if you find that the 'DisplayName' does not reflect what you use that field for, you may change it as you wish.
When you are editing the '*_Summary', '*_Default', '*_Select', and '*_Export' fields, make sure that you are working under the headings of the appropriate LIMS function.
Note that NAPIS is set up to smoothly transfer data from Inventory to Submit to Receive, so editing the '*_Default' column may lead to complications. If you have any questions, please contact White Point Systems.
Step 5. Close Table Interrogator:
Click the 'X' in the upper right hand corner to close Table Interrogator. Your posted edits will be automatically saved.
