WHITE POINT SYSTEMS DELIVERS NAPIS / CHEMSTATION UPLOAD UTILITY

(Friday Harbor, WA) -- White Point Systems, Inc. (WPS, a privately held company), today announces the delivery of a NAPIS / ChemStation Upload Utility software program to the Arizona Center for Phytomedicine Research (ACPRx). The utility program allows scientists to bulk register results from an Agilent ChemStation® chemical separation experiment to the NAPIS® database, and expose these results for integrated query together with chemical sample biological activity and genealogy. Liquid column mass spectroscopy (LC/MS) data acquired by both quadripole and ion trap methods are supported, in addition to UV-visible photo-diode array and multi-wavelength data. The utility program transfers data in the extensible markup language (XML) format and significantly reduces data storage volumes, thereby enhancing performance times for data-mining operations within the NAPIS database program.

ACPRx scientists use NAPIS for storing and sharing data associated with the chemistry of botanical dietary supplements in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) (http://www.nih.gov/news/pr/sep2000/ods-20.htm). The study is designed to investigate the biological activity and mechanism of action of botanical dietary supplements by comparing the biological activity of chemical entities present as discrete chemicals with the same as mixtures. NAPIS is used to manage the complex relationships of chemistry sample genealogy and for data-mining. WPS developed the utility program in collaboration with a key group of ACPRx scientists and with Agilent Technologies.

Dr. Barbara Timmermann, director of ACPRx commented, “The NAPIS/ChemStation Upload Utility will serve to improve the efficiency and accuracy of analytical data entry by automating and streamlining large portions of what previously was accomplished with manual operations. The result is a more efficient use of the scientist’s time, while decreasing the need of error remediation, and assuring greater data integrity.”

David Knoth, a U.S. field operations manager for the Agilent Chemical Analysis Systems sales and marketing group, adds that, " WPS provides a terrific tool for our mutual customers that need to build databases of useful information in this industry. The NAPIS software provides a seamless interface to Agilent customers using our ChemStation® Scientific Instrumentation Software. NAPIS allows the scientist to have all of the data associated with a particular sample including spectra available in one neat package. This is an enormous value to our customers who are sending reports or trying to make logical comparisons and new identification of compounds".

"We are very pleased to support ACPRx on this important study", said Gregg Dietzman, president and program director at WPS. "The informatics strategies for understanding the biological activity of botanical dietary supplements are a logical extension of the strategies used in natural products drug discovery".

About ACPRx

The ACPRx is involved in the scientific study of botanicals available to the public as dietary supplements in order to advance the quality and quantity of scientific information about these products. The center will concentrate its initial efforts on several botanicals purported to be helpful in the treatment of arthritis and other chronic inflammatory conditions, including respiratory diseases such as asthma. The Center’s multidisciplinary research team is currently involved in studies of safety and efficacy of ginger, turmeric and boswellia, botanicals that have been widely used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
