WHITE POINT SYSTEMS RECEIVES 2001 NATIONAL TIBBETTS AWARD FROM THE U.S. SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

(Washington, DC) -- White Point Systems, Inc. (WPS, a privately held company), today received the 2001 National Tibbetts Award for recognition of "outstanding contributions to the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program" from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The award ceremony was held in Washington DC. The company was nominated by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute with the following summary statement:

"White Point Systems, Inc., is an innovative service company that supports the pharmaceutical industry with research informatics for natural products drug discovery. Under support from the SBIR Program, they have successfully developed database products and related services that are designed specifically to support natural products research. The goal is to organize researchers with databases and maps that make their work more efficient. Database products include NAPIS (NAtural Products Information System), a specialized laboratory information management system database that integrates with other chemical and analytical information management systems. Related services include legacy data management and maps that are region-specific biodiversity 'hot-spot' statistical assessments or predictive models of species occurrence that support natural products researchers in the field.

Incorporated as White Point BioMarine in 1993, the company was started to work with marine natural products in drug discovery. The company name was changed in 1998 to reflect the growing emphasis on informatics, however, the BioMarine division is still involved in discovery. In evidence, a Material Transfer, Patent and License agreement was signed with Novartis Pharmaceutical Company in July 2001 to further develop cancer drug leads from the Antarctic which were also discovered with SBIR grant support. This industry partnership represents a significant opportunity to effectively move these active drug leads forward in the development pipeline.

White Point Systems is a company that embodies the mission of the SBIR program, to develop innovative ideas into products and services, and successfully bring them to the marketplace. It is a company that is committed to the role of natural products chemicals in drug discovery. "
